A sleep apnea home study can help you find out if you have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea. It senses and records information about your body while you're asleep or resting at home, and an Australian doctor specialising in sleep will analyse and interpret this information.

When should you consider a sleep apnea home study?

Domestic sleep research is especially useful for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a sickness where respiratory stops and starts off evolved all through sleep because of blocked airways. Symptoms can include loud loud night breathing, gasping for air for the duration of sleep, morning headache, excessive daylight sleepiness, trouble concentrating for the duration of the day, and greater.

If you’ve been feeling unusually drowsy during the day, snoring loudly at night, and can’t access a sleep lab or find it challenging to sleep in a lab setting, a home sleep study could be the perfect solution for you.

Can you test for sleep apnea at home?

You can easily and cheaply find out whether you have sleep apnoea at home. A home sleep apnoea test is a very simple breathing monitor that tracks your breathing, oxygen levels and breathing effort while you wear it.

Troubleshooting Tips for Your Home Sleep Study

Incorrect Sensor Placement

Follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider to correctly place the sensors and belts. Improper placement can result in inaccurate data.

Falling Sensors

If a sensor comes off during the night, just reattach it. If you're unsure about reattachment, most HSAT devices come with a manual for reference.

Device Not Recording

Make sure the device is turned on and the sensors are properly connected. If the device still isn't recording, contact your healthcare provider for assistance.

Discomfort

It might feel a little strange sleeping with the device, but try to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Use pillows to support your body and alleviate any discomfort caused by the belts or sensors.

How accurate are home sleep apnea tests?

Home sleep apnea tests are usually accurate for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common type of sleep apnea. They measure things like how fast your heart beats, your blood oxygen levels, and your breathing to see if there are any problems.

However, these tests may not be as good at diagnosing other types of sleep disorders, like Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) and Mixed Sleep Apnea. For these, you would need to do more complex monitoring, such as brain activity and muscle movement tests. Home tests can be a good place to start, but the best way to check for all types and levels of sleep apnoea is with an overnight sleep study at a lab. This is called a polysomnography. It is very important to speak to a doctor who specialises in sleep problems. They can help you choose the right test for your symptoms and medical history.

How much does a sleep apnea test cost in Australia?

The cost of a sleep apnea test depends on the type of test and where it is conducted:

  • Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT): A simpler, more convenient option performed at home using portable equipment. Costs typically range from $150 to $500 due to its lower level of supervision and reduced complexity.

  • In-Lab Polysomnography: A comprehensive test carried out overnight in a sleep clinic or hospital, with monitoring by healthcare professionals. This sleep apnea home study test is more expensive, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 or more, depending on the location, facility, and complexity.

Note: Many insurance providers, including Medicare, often cover sleep apnea tests if deemed medically necessary. However, coverage varies, so it's important to check with your insurance company to confirm what costs may be covered.

How much does Medicare pay for CPAP?

Medicare will cover 80% of the approved amount for 13 months of rent for a CPAP machine. After you've paid your Medicare Part B deductible, you'll pay the remaining 20%. After Medicare has made rental payments for 13 months in a row, you will own the machine.
