What is a Nasal Mask?
CPAP Nasal masks cover your nose from the bridge to the top of your lip. They provide an indirect flow of air and are a good choice if you need higher pressure. If you wake up often during the night, you may find this type of sleep apnoea mask helpful.
If you breathe through your mouth, you may have problems unless you use something to stop your mouth from opening. If you find it hard to breathe through your nose, this mask might not be right for you.
Advantages of CPAP Nasal Masks
There are numerous benefits to choosing a nasal mask over a nasal pillow mask or full face mask. CPAP Nasal masks are an excellent choice for people who need a lighter mask that still maintains high air pressure throughout the night.
CPAP Nasal masks are ideal if you:
+ Sleep with your mouth closed
+ Move around a lot during sleep
+ Prefer a lightweight and discreet mask
Like any CPAP therapy, the use of nasal masks has its pros and cons. Here are some important points:
Advantages:
+ Available in different styles
+ Allows freedom of movement during sleep
+ Provides indirect pressure and a more natural air supply
Disadvantages:
- Mouth must remain closed while wearing
- The straps can cause skin irritation for some people
- May not be suitable for people with allergies
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can a mouth breather use a nasal CPAP mask?
If you breathe through your mouth while you sleep, the two best CPAP mask options are a full-face mask or a nasal mask that fastens around your chin. These options are designed to stop water from leaking out of your mouth during therapy. Your doctor may also suggest a different type of mask, depending on your situation.
How often should I clean my CPAP nasal mask?
You should clean your CPAP machine once a week.
Wash your CPAP mask, tubing and re-usable filter in warm, soapy water about once a week. Let it dry thoroughly before using again. We find that mild soaps work the best.
What size nasal CPAP mask do i need?
The ideal size for your mask depends on factors such as your facial structure and preferred mask style; see our mask sizing guide for more details
