CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is a device that uses light air pressure to keep the airways open during sleep. Your doctor may prescribe CPAP to treat sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnoea.

Parts of a CPAP Mask
The CPAP mask delivers oxygen to your lungs from the therapy machine. Here's how they work. The frame of a CPAP mask makes it easy for air to flow through. They also have headgear that you can't slip out of, to keep the mask on your head. The tubes are very important for the therapy to work properly, and you must connect the heated tube to the humidifier to keep the air moist. Every night, check the tubing to make sure there is no damage to the outside and that it is not cracked. Also, check the three cushions: the full face cushion, the gel pillows and the nasal cushion.
CPAP Mask Types
Choosing the right CPAP masks is a decisive factor for the success of CPAP therapy. After many years of research and development, significant improvements have been made to the design of these masks. They are now smaller, lighter, less conspicuous and much more effective as well as more comfortable to wear.
There are currently 3 different types of CPAP masks for sale:
Full face mask
Full face masks, while not the most popular choice, are an essential sleep apnoea mask type. They allow breathing through both the nose and mouth, making them suitable for those who cannot avoid mouth breathing while sleeping. These masks are bulkier than nasal masks and nasal pillows and are not ideal for people who move a lot during sleep or prefer sleeping on their side.
+ Ideal for those who breathe through their mouth or have difficulty breathing through their nose.
Pros:
+ Allows comfortable breathing through the mouth or nose.
+ It is considered the most effective mask for those who suffer from allergies or periodic nasal congestion.
Cons
- This mask is more difficult to wear if you sleep on your stomach or side.
- With this mask, watching TV or wearing glasses can become difficult.
- There is a high probability of air leaks.
- Air leak issues can cause dry eyes.
- It can cause irritation at higher temperatures.
Pillow Mask
Pillow masks are the most compact among the three main types of CPAP masks. They are popular for those who do not need high pressure from their CPAP machine, offering a smaller and more targeted design compared to full face masks. The key difference is that nasal pillows masks seal directly into the nostrils with two soft pillows, rather than fitting around the nose.
+ Ideal for those who move around a lot during sleep or suffer from claustrophobia when using larger masks for the treatment of sleep apnoea. Also, if you have a beard or moustache, this may be a good choice. With the nasal mask, you can read or watch television easily, even with glasses.
Pros
+ You can wear glasses under the mask if you want to read before going to sleep.
+ Your vision will not be obstructed if you want to watch television before going to sleep.
+ Minimal contact with the face reduces the risk of skin irritation.
+ Air leakage is minimal as the mask is connected directly to the nostrils.
+ The mask allows you to move around while you sleep.
Cons
- Not suitable for high blood pressure, as the airflow directed into the nostrils may cause discomfort.
- Not effective if your mouth is open while you sleep.
- Continuous pressure may cause nasal dryness and, in some cases, nosebleeds.
Nasal Mask
Nasal masks combine the compact size of nasal pillows with a design similar to CPAP Masks full face, making them a great option for beginners in CPAP therapy. However, like nasal pillow masks, they should be avoided by mouth breathers and those with chronic sinus congestion or a deviated septum.
+ If you experience restless sleep, this type of mask for treating sleep apnoea may be right for you. During sleep at night, your mouth remains closed.
Pros
+ Available in different models.
+ Allows movement during sleep.
+ Indirect pressure and more natural air circulation.
Cons
- The mouth must remain closed while using the mask.
- The straps may cause irritation in some people.
- May not be suitable for people with allergies.
Choosing the Right CPAP Masks
When you buy a CPAP mask, make sure the medical facility uses a 3D facial scanning system to create a strong profile. This analysis looks at the differences in the faces of people with sleep apnoea and snoring. We make sure that sleep apnoea masks fit well when you buy them. When you start sleep therapy, it's important to know how the mask is put together. You should also replace them when it's time, as they come with built-in holes to let the air out. CPAP mask replacements can be purchased both online and in-store at competitive prices. Find your perfect fit today by using our Mask Finder tool
For side sleepers, a well-fitting mask that remains secure throughout the night is essential. Nasal or nasal pillow masks are often recommended as full face masks can slip during sleep. The best rated CPAP masks for side sleepers include the ResMed AirFit N20, Philips Respironics Nuance Nasal Cushion Mask and Fisher & Paykel Eson 2 Nasal Mask. When buying, the fit, the position of the straps and the size of the mask frame should be taken into account.
How to Fit a CPAP Mask?
At CPAP Discount Warehouse, we've made it easy to find the ideal fit for your CPAP mask. Whether it's a full face, nasal, or nasal pillow mask, our mask sizing guides and templates are here to assist you
Cleaning your CPAP Mask
Masks should generally be replaced within 12 months of first use. Some parts of CPAP masks may need to be replaced sooner than others. These parts can be replaced as needed, or it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire mask. Regular care and daily cleaning of the mask with a mild detergent will ensure maximum mask life.
Weekly cleaning: Separate the mask, straps, and tubing from each other and disconnect the tubing from the device and humidifier. Wash them with a mild cleaning solution, rinse thoroughly, and allow them to air dry. Hang the tubes on a rod to dry completely. Avoid damage: Use warm water and mild soap.
The silicone cushion and headgear are two important components that need to be replaced annually. Both components can be purchased separately to extend the life of the mask.
